Adventure Walk: 1 Ethel, 2 hills and 3 villages
Date: Saturday 7th June
Meet at 8.45 for 9.00am start at Bonsall village car park, Clatterway, DE4 2AD
Distance: 8 miles, 4 hours
The walk: Footpaths, farm tracks and quiet lanes without pavement. Some areas prone to mud and uneven walking after rain.
We start walking from Bonsall to Cromford and from there uphill to the High Peak Trail. Which we will follow to Black Rocks. Then it’s going more uphill to the Bolehill Trig point, which is an Ethel, 323m high. From here it’s downhill to Wirksworth. When we are lucky, we can see one of the steam trains leaving the station. We will walk through the village, maybe stopping for a drink before going uphill again. While walking back to Bonsall, we will see lots of used quarries. Lead has been mined in the limestone areas of the Peak District since at least Roman times. The quarrying of high-quality limestone also started in that period. Bonsall Moor and Wirksworth are rich in old mine workings while around Middleton the limestone quarries are still in production.
