Janneke's adventure walk: Dane Valley Way and Lud's Church
Janneke Gorzeman - White Peak Nordic Walking
Overview
Adventure Walk: Dane Valley Walk and Lud’s Church
Meet at 9.45 for a 10am start at The Ship Inn, Danebridge SK11 0QE
Distance: 5 miles, 2.5 – 3 hours
The walk: Footpaths, farm tracks and quiet lanes without pavement. Some areas prone to mud and uneven walking.
The river Dane is little known, although it may be a quiet river, it has managed to carve out a valley of beauty on its meanders through the moorlands of the Peak District’s ‘Wild West’.
This walk starts with a section of the Dane Valley Way, we follow the River Dane upstream through woodland and fields until we reach the signpost for Lud’s Church. Lud’s Church is a deep, moss-covered muddy chasm full of history and myths, and to walk down its stone steps deep into the cleft is to escape into another world.
After exploring Lud's Church, our walk returns to Danebridge.
There is the possibility to have lunch in The Ship Inn. The historic pub dates all the way back to the 16th century and has a cosy interior with fires to warm yourself by during the colder months. In the summer you can sit outside in the little beer garden. It is also possible to visit the Wincle brewery, but they don’t do food.
