Bowls (indoor) - all ages and mobility levels

Overview

Indoor Bowls is social game and offers a way to meet new people and make friends. One of the attractions of indoor bowling is that it can be played all year round (never mind the UK rain or the hot sunshine!) and by all ages, both men & women, juniors and seniors. People of all abilities can play, including people with physical or mental disabilities. This includes wheelchair users, users of walking sticks, blind bowlers & more. Its purpose is this: you must aim your bowl as near to the white ball (called the jack) as you can. Bowlers take it in turns. Once all the bowls have been played, each team gets a point for every bowl landing closer to the jack than their rival’s nearest. Once all the bowls have been played, the direction of play changes and you start again. Like all sports, players world-wide recognise that the sport brings certain benefits, such as learning rules, discipline and even having a uniform if you represent your club ... or county... or even country! The game can be played in singles, doubles, triples or four player games. It's a great sport to get involved in - contact Ashford Indoor Bowls Centre for any questions you may have or to come and have a look.

Accessibility Information:

Access; if you have a blue badge and have phoned beforehand, we have a limited number of member / visitor spaces just outside the entrance door. The public car park is only around 20m away, it has a few disable spaces too. Standard spaces can have an uneven surface in places so be careful, although there are some paths. Entrance to centre itself is via push button to alert staff and they will release the front door. Entrance has a step free access. To get to the bowling area is by ramp or steps. Onto the rinks themselves can be via a ramp, able bodied players step onto the rink and there are permanent handholds available. Each green has a 'picker-upper', so you don't need to able to bend down to the floor to pick up your bowls. We have gents, ladies and a disabled toilet. Wheelchair users can borrow a club wheelchair that is suitable for use on the bowling green. Users of walking aids / sticks must have a larger flat base on the end. We can discuss this and any other bowling aids that you might find useful to use. Some of our existing bowlers use 'bowling arms' . Any questions or concerns, please do ask.
