Building Bridges and Breaking Barriers: Disability Sports Coach Unites the Capital with Inclusive Sport!

This month, we’re celebrating Disability Sports Coach (DSC) as our Club of the Month for September 2024! DSC isn’t just breaking a sweat—they’re breaking down barriers and building a community across London, where everyone can get involved in sport. From north to south, east to west, their inclusive sessions create spaces where disabled people can connect, thrive, and get active. At DSC, sport is about more than just moving your body—it’s about moving the community forward!

Founded in 2005, DSC has been transforming lives across the capital by providing sport and physical activity opportunities for disabled people of all ages and abilities. With 9 community clubs across London, they offer a welcoming environment for individuals to connect, build confidence, and improve their physical and mental well-being. Whether it’s wheelchair basketball, inclusive fitness classes, or multi-sport activities, DSC has something for everyone.

Peter Ackred - Founder and CEO of Disability Sports Coach said "We’re incredibly proud to be recognised as Club of the Month. Our members were so thrilled to be visited by ParalympicsGB!

At Disability Sports Coach, our mission has always been to ensure that sport is accessible to everyone, regardless of ability. Every session is about creating a sense of community, where people can come together, challenge themselves, and most importantly, have fun."

A Commitment to Accessibility

At the heart of DSC’s work is their commitment to ensuring sport is accessible to all. Their sessions, like those held at Club Wandsworth, are designed to meet various needs, fostering a supportive environment where everyone can participate, whether they’re new to sport or experienced athletes. DSC’s dedicated coaches work hard to make each session engaging, fun, and inclusive.

Peter went on to say "Disabled people face a lot of barriers to sport and because of that, they are twice as likely to be inactive as non-disabled people. That's why it’s amazing to see the impact of our work across London - from improving physical and mental health at our Clubs, to training disabled people to become sports coaches.

The success of Paralympics GB has put the spotlight on disability sport. We’re excited to keep growing and breaking barriers so more people can get involved."

Services for All

DSC’s impact goes beyond their community clubs. They offer a range of services to promote accessibility in sport:

Community Clubs: These weekly sessions provide a space for disabled individuals to stay active, socialise, and enjoy sports like boccia, sitting volleyball, and athletics. Each club is tailored to its members, ensuring that everyone feels included and valued.

School Coaching & Disability Awareness: DSC delivers coaching programmes in schools, supporting teachers and students to make PE and sport accessible to all, ensuring children with disabilities can participate alongside their peers.

Inclusive Activity Leaders: A comprehensive programme that trains disabled and non-disabled people side by side to qualify as sports coaches and enjoy new employment opportunities.

DSC also works with organisations to improve accessibility in sport by offering bespoke training on inclusive coaching, facility adaptations, and equipment. They also host year-round events and festivals, uniting participants to celebrate and showcase the abilities of disabled individuals across London.
