Overview

The Wheelability project provides access to cycling to disabled and non-disabled people. The project is all about cycling together and helping everyone to enjoy the beautiful Thanet Coast, in a fun and relaxed way. We have a large range of bikes including hand bikes – suitable for people with limited or no lower body mobility, tricycles including one with a front seat that people can transfer from a wheelchair onto, tandems which enable one person to take over the peddling and steering so provide good access for people with visual impairments, as well a number of regular bikes.

When we meet:

Our volunteers are here every Thursday, but once you have had your induction and have joined you can come when ever suits you. You could come as a family or with friends or even start your own group that’s meets at a time that works for all of you.

Is there a specific meeting point at the address:

Drive all the way along The Parade Minnis Bay, Waves Café will be on your left and the Minnis Bay bar will be in front of you. Follow the road round to the left and you will enter the Minnis Bay Car Park.
Drive through the car park with the toilet block on your right hand side, beyond the block on your right you will see two storage containers, you have reached the Wheelability project.

Equipment:

You don’t need to bring any special equipment with you the bikes are all provided, you may wish to bring with you your own helmet although we do have some you can borrow.
Wear comfortable clothing that you can move in such as tracksuit bottoms, and trainers. We are situated right on the sea front so remember to dress for the weather. On a sunny day you will need sun cream and a hat and if windy you will need a jumper, coat and perhaps some gloves.

Accessibility Information:

There is plenty of parking in the car park with spaces directly in front of Wheelability, please be aware that this car park is charged all year round. There are free parking spaces out on The Parade, this is a short walk from the project without any inclines.
There are Council operated Disabled Toilets available in the car park. The non-disabled toilets are also usually open at this site throughout the year, but it is worth checking the Council website before you visit.
There are café’s and restaurants a short distance from Wheelabillity with hot and cold food and drinks available, and there is also lots of green space and the beach across the road if you want to bring a picnic and make a day of it.
