Overview

Life Cycle UK's simple service reaches out to people who cannot ride a bike independently and helps them to experience the joys and freedoms of cycling. We pair up visually-impaired adults or disabled young people with sighted volunteer ‘front riders’ who pilot a tandem bicycle, with the ‘back riders’ at the rear.

Together, they head out on quiet cycle ways, exploring the countryside around Bristol on an annual programme of group rides or 1:1 sessions – completely free of charge.

Our riders range from age 8 – 80+. Many are visually impaired but we also offer rides for those with a range of disabilities including: Cerebral Palsy, Global Developmental Delay and Autism.

We also partner with Ride Out Ride On to provide recumbent tandem rides for those who cannot sit on a standard tandem.

Accessibility Information:

The project is uniquely accessible as tandem cycling doesn’t require any specialist equipment, facilities or training – almost anyone can participate, alongside their able-bodied peers. Crucially, nobody is excluded because of their personal circumstances. Our rides are free and we may be able to organise lifts and taxis to enable the riders to get to and from each ride.
